June 14, 1935 - Fitzwater Hitless, Stopped by Indians

Fitzwater
COLUMBUS, OHIO - The 37-game hitting streak of Columbus Red Birds outfielder John Fitzwater came to an end today at Red Bird Stadium. The Indianapolis Indians managed to do what countless teams before them couldn't, and beat the Red Birds 5-1 in the process.

Fitzwater, a 26-year-old from San Antonio, Tex., is hitting .384 on the season so far. Earlier in the streak, he told a reporter "I'm in a groove right now, and I am trying to stay there by doing the same things over and over again. If I change something, it might bring me bad luck."

Fitzwater brought nothing but bad luck to the Red Birds opponents. During the streak, which began on May 1 with a 1-for-4 day against the Milwaukee Brewers at Borchert Field, the Red Birds went 21-16. Columbus fans doubtless hope that Fitzwater can start a new streak, and soon.
